Carciano - Levo

Path: CAI

Walking Time: about 2 hours

Degree of difficulty: easy

Leaving the hamlet of Carciano, you can walk up the CAI path that leads to the hamlet of Levo, situated at about 600m above sea level.
Along this route, besides offering wonderful views of Borromea shore, you can admire a series of votive chapels and small churches, typical of Lake Maggiore.
At Levo you can visit the ancient church of Saints James and Philip, also known as “ the Sanctuary”.
The church Tower, which dates back to the XXI century, is classified as national monument.
Inside the oratory you can admire two funeral steles, probably belonging to the Roman Empire and well-preserved.
At the rear of the church, (perhaps the ancient church’ s entry), a stone crossbeam bears the sun image.
Going towards the village of Gignese, you meet a spring with pure water which pours directly from the rocks. After about ten minutes’ walk, along a tree-lined avenue, from where you can view the beautiful landscape of the lake, on the left there is a CAI path which leads you to Stresa, going past the “Pissarot” waterfalls, about 25 m. high.
